We demand that City Council recognize the dangers of the current design and re-imagine a Main Street that is safe for all users.
We demand an immediate temporary re-work of the lanes on Main Street in order to calm traffic this year.
We demand a long term re-build of Main Street as a calmed, complete, humane two-way street that all users feel safe on.
I am writing to express my concerns about the traffic safety issues on Main Street. I am urging you to recognize that the design of the street is contributing to an increase in collisions, putting all residents at risk.
I am urging you to follow through with two measures:
1. Take immediate action to close the left and right curb lanes to vehicular traffic, by deploying temporary barriers where necessary and and permitting 24 hour parking in these lanes, plus add a painted bus-only lane.
2. Initiate work to convert Main Street to a two-way street with protected bike lanes and widened sidewalks, targeting completion in advance of LRT construction.
I have copied the remainder of council with the hope that all wards will collaborate on this project with the goal of eliminating fatal collisions on this street. We cannot afford to wait - we need action now.
